Valid vs Invalid FVG — How to Filter ICT Fair Value Gaps

The 8-criterion ICT FVG validity filter — 3 gate criteria that eliminate invalid FVGs and 5 quality graders that rank valid FVGs from Strong to Weak. The displacement candle test, the minimum gap width table, the P/D position gate, the Judas FVG trap, and the AMD phase quality matrix.
Ask most ICT traders what is wrong with their FVG analysis and they will say their FVGs are not reacting. Ask to see their chart and you will typically find dozens of FVG rectangles of every size — small gaps from weak candles, FVGs in the wrong premium/discount zone, FVGs created during consolidation, FVGs already filled. The problem is not the FVG concept — it is the absence of a quality filter.

Key takeaways

  • 3 gate criteria (C1–C3): displacement quality, gap width, P/D position. Fail any gate = INVALID. Mark grey.
  • 5 quality graders (C4–C8): structural significance, unmitigated status, HTF confluence, AMD phase, kill zone. Grade valid FVGs Strong/Moderate/Weak.
  • The Judas FVG (Phase 2 manipulation sweep) is the most dangerous FVG to enter — it is in the opposite direction to Phase 3.
  • A Strong FVG: large-body C2, 10+ pip gap, below CE, at a CHoCH, unmitigated, 1H OB confluence, Phase 3 MSS, London kill zone.
  • “Invalid” does not mean “no reaction ever” — it means “not high-probability at standard size.”

Why most FVG charts over-mark

Applied purely mechanically, the three-candle gap definition produces dozens of “FVGs” on any active chart. But the ICT FVG concept describes a price imbalance created by genuine institutional displacement, not any three-candle sequence that happens to leave a gap. Over-marking creates two compounding problems: premature entries from low-quality FVGs produce frequent small losses, and the high-quality FVGs are buried within the noise — impossible to identify during the 2-minute window before the MSS retracement reaches them.

The 8-criterion FVG validity filter

3 GATES + 5 GRADERSICT
The 8-criterion FVG validity filter: 3 gates and 5 quality graders Eight stacked bars split into two groups. Top group (3 bars, dark): Gate criteria — C1 displacement quality, C2 gap width, C3 P/D position. Bottom group (5 bars, lighter): Quality graders — C4 structural significance, C5 unmitigated status, C6 HTF confluence, C7 AMD phase, C8 kill zone timing. FAIL ANY GATE = INVALID (GREY) · GATES PASS → QUALITY GRADERS DETERMINE STRONG / MODERATE / WEAK — ALL 3 GATES PASSED → APPLY QUALITY GRADERS — C1 GATE · Displacement qualitybody ≥60%, opposing wick <20%, close near extreme C2 GATE · Gap width≥3 pips (5M EUR/USD), exceeds avg candle body C3 GATE · Premium/discount positionbullish below CE · bearish above CE C4 · Structural significance (BOS/CHoCH)Strong if yes C5 · Unmitigated status (fresh)Full CE precision C6 · HTF confluence (1H OB/FVG overlap)Dual-TF backing C7 · AMD phase (Phase 3 MSS = highest)Judas = DO NOT ENTER C8 · Kill zone timing (London / NY AM)Peak institutional flow
3 gates, then 5 graders. Criteria 1–3 are non-negotiable: fail any one and the FVG is invalid (mark grey, do not enter). Only after all three gates pass do the quality graders (C4–C8) determine whether the valid FVG is Strong, Moderate, or Weak — which sets the position size, entry method, and target.

The displacement candle — the primary validity test

STRONG vs WEAK C2ICT
Strong C2 displacement candle vs weak C2 — valid vs invalid FVG Two candles compared. Left: strong C2 with 90% body-to-range ratio, 10% opposing wick, close in top 10% — VALID. Right: weak C2 with 26% body-to-range, 74% opposing wick, mid-range close — INVALID. STRONG C2 → VALID FVGWEAK C2 → INVALID FVG body: 90% of range wick: 10% (minimal) close: top 10% ★ VALID — institutional displacement wick: 74% (dominant) body: 26% of range close: mid-range ✗ INVALID — not a displacement A FVG CAN ONLY BE AS STRONG AS THE C2 THAT CREATED IT
The FVG inherits C2’s quality. Left: strong C2 — body dominates (90%), minimal opposing wick (10%), close near the extreme. The gap it creates carries genuine institutional imbalance. Right: weak C2 — wick dominates (74%), small body (26%), mid-range close. The gap is mechanical coincidence, not institutional commitment.
Three C2 quality checks: (1) body-to-range ratio — body ÷ (high − low). ≥60% = strong, 40–60% = moderate, <40% = fail gate. (2) Opposing wick size — wick ÷ range. <20% = strong, 20–40% = moderate, >40% = fail. (3) Close position — top 25% of range for bullish C2, bottom 25% for bearish = strong. Close below midpoint = fail. All three must pass for Gate C1.

Gap width minimums

Below the minimum = micro-FVG noise. Spread eliminates CE precision.

The P/D position gate — the 5-second CE check

Before marking any FVG as valid: (1) identify the nearest dealing range swing high and low, (2) calculate CE = (high + low) ÷ 2, (3) confirm the FVG zone is on the correct side. Bullish FVG below CE = valid. Bullish FVG above CE = invalid. This five-second check eliminates one of the highest-frequency ICT FVG entry errors. A bullish FVG in premium looks visually identical to one in discount — only the CE check reveals the context violation.

AMD phase quality — the context grader

The AMD phase determines FVG quality and entry protocol
AMD phaseFVG qualityEntry protocol
Phase 3 — MSS displacementHIGHESTStandard size. Limit at CE. LTF CHoCH preferred.
Phase 3 — propulsion sub-legHIGHStandard size. LTF CHoCH required.
Phase 1 — consolidationLOW50% size. LTF CHoCH mandatory. Weak FVG only.
Phase 2 — Judas sweepINVALID — DO NOT ENTERThe Judas FVG is the opposite of Phase 3. Never enter.

The Judas FVG trap — the most dangerous FVG

The Judas FVG appears at the moment of maximum retail urgency — during the sweep, price moves decisively, creating what appears to be a strong FVG from a large displacement. But the sweep direction is Phase 2 manipulation — the exact opposite of Phase 3 distribution. The identification test: did the C2 displacement sweep a prior session boundary (Asian range high/low, PDH/PDL)? If yes → Judas FVG. Wait for the MSS displacement in the opposite direction — that FVG is the valid Phase 3 entry.

Strong / Moderate / Weak — quality determines sizing

Strong FVG
All 3 gates pass + 4–5 quality graders pass

Standard size. Limit at FVG CE. LTF CHoCH preferred but not mandatory. Full AMD target. Example: large-body C2, 10+ pip gap, below CE, at a CHoCH, unmitigated, 1H OB confluence, Phase 3 MSS, London kill zone.

Moderate FVG
All 3 gates pass + 2–3 quality graders pass

Standard or 75% size. LTF CHoCH required. Nearest delivery level target (not full AMD). Missing HTF confluence, or continuation gap without BOS, or created outside kill zone.

Weak FVG
All 3 gates pass + 0–1 quality graders pass

50% size. LTF CHoCH mandatory. Nearest delivery level only. Phase 1 consolidation FVG, no HTF backing, tested-but-holding status, outside kill zone.

The 8-question checklist — before every FVG entry

[GATE] Q1: Is C2 a genuine displacement candle?

Body ≥60%, opposing wick <20%, close near extreme. NO → invalid, mark grey.

[GATE] Q2: Is the gap width above the minimum?

≥3 pips (5M EUR/USD). Exceeds avg surrounding candle body. NO → micro-FVG, mark grey.

[GATE] Q3: Correct side of the dealing range CE?

Bullish below CE. Bearish above CE. NO → discordant, mark grey.

Q4: Does C2 create or accompany a BOS/CHoCH?

YES → Strong. NO → Moderate (continuation gap).

Q5: Is the FVG unmitigated (fresh)?

YES → full CE precision. NO → enter from far boundary, reduced size.

Q6: Does the FVG CE fall within a 1H OB or FVG?

YES → dual-timeframe backing. NO → single-TF only, Moderate.

Q7: Is this a Phase 3 FVG (not Phase 1 or Phase 2)?

Phase 3 MSS → highest. Propulsion → high. Phase 1 → weak. Phase 2 Judas → DO NOT ENTER.

Q8: Created during London or NY AM kill zone?

YES → peak institutional flow. NO → lower backing, grade weak.

Common mistakes

Marking every three-candle gap as an FVG

A mechanical gap is not an institutional imbalance. Apply the 3 gates before marking. A chart with 3–4 strong FVGs is more useful than one with 20 noise rectangles.

Entering from a Judas FVG (Phase 2 manipulation)

The Judas FVG is the opposite of Phase 3. The sweep direction reverses after the manipulation completes. Wait for the MSS displacement in the opposite direction.

Skipping the 5-second CE check (P/D position)

A bullish FVG in premium looks identical to one in discount on the 5M chart. Only the CE check reveals the context violation. Five seconds eliminates a systematic entry error.

Using the same size for Strong and Weak FVGs

Strong = standard size, full target. Weak = 50%, nearest level. Quality determines sizing. Identical sizing across quality grades eliminates the filter’s risk-management value.

FAQ — valid vs invalid FVG

What makes an FVG valid in ICT? +
Three gates: (1) genuine displacement C2 (body ≥60%, wick <20%, close near extreme), (2) gap width above minimum, (3) correct P/D position. Plus five quality graders: BOS/CHoCH, unmitigated, HTF confluence, Phase 3, kill zone.
What is an invalid FVG? +
Fails any gate: weak C2 (body <40%, large wick), gap below minimum (micro-FVG), or wrong side of CE. Mark grey, do not enter at any standard size.
What is a Phase 2 Judas FVG? +
The FVG created during the manipulation sweep before Phase 3 reversal. Entering means entering just before reversal. Test: did C2 sweep a session boundary? If yes → Judas FVG. Do not enter.
What is the minimum gap width? +
5M EUR/USD: ≥3 pips. 15M: ≥5. 1H: ≥8. 4H/Daily: ≥15. Below = micro-FVG. Gap should also exceed average surrounding candle body size.

Conclusion — fewer, higher-quality FVGs

The valid/invalid filter reduces a chart covered in noise to 3–4 genuinely high-quality FVGs per session. The three gates eliminate the invalid. The five graders rank the valid from Strong to Weak and set the size, entry method, and target for each. A Strong FVG — large-body C2, 10+ pip gap, below the CE, at a CHoCH, unmitigated, 1H OB confluence, Phase 3 MSS, London kill zone — is one of the highest-probability single entries in ICT.
