ICT Double Purge — Complete Guide

ICT double purge explained — the two-stage liquidity sweep that collects BOTH sides before the real move begins. The 4-stage sequence, bullish vs bearish double purge, the key rule (second sweep reveals direction), 3 common locations, and the trading process.
When the London session appears to start with a textbook Judas sweep, and the experienced ICT trader fades it correctly with a CHoCH entry — only to be immediately stopped out by a second sweep in the original direction — the double purge is the explanation. The first sweep was not the Judas. The second sweep was.

Key takeaways

  • Double purge = two-stage sweep that collects stops on BOTH sides of the range within one session.
  • 4 stages: Stage 1 sweep → Stage 2 fake reversal → Stage 3 second sweep → Stage 4 true delivery.
  • The key rule: true delivery is OPPOSITE to the second sweep. Second sweep buy-side = bearish. Second sweep sell-side = bullish.
  • The double purge defeats both naive AND experienced traders. Stage 1 traps directional traders. Stage 2 traps Judas faders.
  • Stage 4 delivery = the strongest move of the session. Both stop clusters fuel the same directional move.

What is an ICT double purge?

Definition

  • An ICT double purge is a two-stage liquidity collection event where price sweeps the stop clusters on both sides of a defined range within a single session. Stage 1 targets one side. The fake reversal (Stage 2) attracts new entries. Stage 3 sweeps those new entries from the other side. After both sides are purged, Stage 4 — genuine institutional delivery — begins with momentum opposite to the second sweep.

Why institutions engineer a double purge

Two reasons. First: maximum liquidity collection. For an unusually large position, one side’s stops may be insufficient. Sweeping both sides provides the combined liquidity needed. Second: the double trap. Stage 1 traps naive directional traders. The fake reversal attracts experienced ICT-aware traders who correctly faded Stage 1. Stage 3 then stops out those experienced traders too. After the double purge, no significant retail opposition remains — Stage 4 delivery moves through a market completely cleaned of opposing positions.

The 4-stage sequence (bearish double purge)

BEARISH DOUBLE PURGE15M
Bearish double purge — 4 stages: SSL sweep, fake reversal, BSL sweep, then true bearish delivery A chart within an Asian range box. Stage 1: wick below the range low sweeping SSL. Stage 2: price reverses upward through the range (fake recovery). Stage 3: wick above the range high sweeping BSL. Stage 4: large bearish candles delivering below the range toward PDL. AR High AR Low STAGE 1 SSL swept looks like Judas STAGE 2 fake reversal — THE TRAP STAGE 3 BSL swept ALL longs purged STAGE 4 true bearish delivery ★ ENTER SHORT here
Four stages, two sweeps, one true direction. Stage 1: SSL swept below the Asian low (looks like a bullish Judas). Stage 2: fake reversal upward through the range (the trap — ICT traders enter long here). Stage 3: BSL swept above the Asian high (all longs purged). Stage 4: true bearish delivery — enter short after the Stage 3 turtle soup closes back below the high.

The key rule — the second sweep reveals the direction

The Rule

  • True delivery direction is OPPOSITE to the second sweep. Second sweep was buy-side (above) = bearish delivery. Second sweep was sell-side (below) = bullish delivery. The second sweep reveals which side institutions needed to purge last before their genuine delivery.

Three most common double purge locations

1. Asian range — both boundaries swept

Most common. When both the Asian high and low have dense stop clusters (EQH above AND EQL below), London sweeps both within the session. Pre-session signal: both boundaries cleanly tested 2+ times.

2. EQH AND EQL — double dense cluster

Distinct structural EQL below AND EQH above (not just at the Asian range). Both carry triple or quadruple stop density. Combined liquidity from two dense levels funds a substantial institutional position.

3. PDH AND PDL — highest magnitude

Both prior day extremes swept within the same session. Occurs on higher-volatility days. Produces the largest Stage 4 delivery moves — both accumulated stop clusters from the prior session’s full range are collected.

Double purge vs single stop hunt

SINGLE vs DOUBLEICT
Single stop hunt (1 sweep, standard delivery) vs double purge (2 sweeps, stronger delivery) Two mini-flow diagrams. Left: single — one sweep arrow then straight delivery. Right: double — sweep arrow down, fake reversal arrow up, second sweep arrow above, then delivery arrow down (stronger). SINGLE STOP HUNTDOUBLE PURGE 1 sweep → delivery 1 side swept, 1 reversal standard delivery strength Phase 2: 30–60 min sweep 1 sweep 2 → TRUE delivery 2 sides swept, both purged ★ strongest delivery Phase 2: 60–180 min
Same concept, different scale. Single: one sweep, one reversal, standard delivery. Double: two sweeps, both retail populations trapped, strongest delivery of the session. A standard Judas and Stage 1 of a double purge look identical — the distinction emerges when Stage 2’s reversal approaches the opposite boundary.

Trading process — surviving and profiting from the double purge

Pre-session: flag potential double purge sessions

Both sides densely defined (EQL below AND EQH above)? Daily bias ambiguous? Recent double purge frequency? Flag the session. Plan reduced Stage 1 size and a full Stage 3 re-entry.

Stage 1: take the first sweep entry at reduced size

If the sweep and CHoCH confirm, enter at half size. The standard Judas entry is still correct most of the time — but on potential double purge sessions, the reduced size makes the potential Stage 2 stop-out manageable.

Monitor Stage 2: activate double purge hypothesis

When the Stage 2 reversal extends beyond the range midpoint and approaches the opposite boundary, the double purge is active. Exit or reduce Stage 1 positions immediately.

Stage 3: the primary entry of the session

The second sweep completes — turtle soup candle at the opposite boundary closes back inside. Enter FULL size in the direction opposite to the second sweep. This is the highest-probability entry of the session.

Stage 4: hold to the full daily target

Both stop clusters are fuelling the move. Target the full AMD daily objective — the delivery typically exceeds the normal single-sweep target because both sides’ liquidity is propelling it.

Common mistakes

Full-size entry on Stage 1 during a double purge session

On flagged sessions, a full-size Stage 1 entry that gets stopped out by Stage 3 is a significant loss. Reduce Stage 1 to half on potential double purge days — the Stage 3 full-size entry recovers and exceeds the loss.

Quitting after the Stage 1 stop-out

The worst possible response. The Stage 3 re-entry after the double purge is the strongest entry of the session. Being stopped out on Stage 1 is the cost of admission — the Stage 4 delivery more than compensates.

Entering Stage 2 as if it were genuine distribution

Stage 2 looks like post-Judas distribution. Adding to Stage 1 positions during Stage 2 increases exposure to the Stage 3 stop-out. On flagged sessions, do not add during Stage 2.

Not recognising the Stage 2 warning

When the “reversal” from the first sweep extends beyond the range midpoint toward the opposite boundary, activate the double purge hypothesis. Exit or reduce immediately — do not wait for the full Stage 3 sweep to confirm.

Treating every double sweep as a double purge

A genuine BOS through one side followed by distribution to the other is NOT a double purge — it is a standard directional session. The double purge requires both sides to be SWEPT (wick beyond, close back inside), not broken.

FAQ — ICT double purge

What is a double purge? +
Two-stage sweep collecting stops on BOTH sides. Stage 1 sweeps one side, Stage 2 fakes a reversal, Stage 3 sweeps the other, Stage 4 delivers opposite to the second sweep.
Double purge vs single stop hunt? +
Single: 1 sweep, 1 reversal, standard delivery. Double: 2 sweeps, both sides purged, stronger delivery. Extends AMD Phase 2 and traps both naive AND experienced traders.
How to know the direction? +
Second sweep reveals it. Second sweep buy-side (above) = bearish delivery. Second sweep sell-side (below) = bullish delivery. True delivery is OPPOSITE to the second sweep.
How to predict it? +
3 signals: (1) both sides densely defined. (2) daily bias ambiguous. (3) recent double purge frequency. Plan reduced Stage 1 and full Stage 3 re-entry.

Conclusion — the double purge is the complete liquidity clearance

Being stopped out twice on opposite sides in the same session is not the market being hostile — it is the most structured, predictable institutional process in ICT. After the double purge, both retail populations are eliminated, and the Stage 4 delivery is the strongest, most sustained move of the session. The Stage 3 turtle soup re-entry after the second sweep is the trade of the day — precisely because both sides have already been purged.
